SYNOPSIS - Short Film

A young teenage boy is reading an old scary story in bed late at night with a dimly lit lamp beside him. His father walks in to say goodnight and tells him it is not good to read scary stories just before going to sleep. Later in the night he is shown dropping the book when falling asleep. When in a deep sleep he steps out of bed and walks downstairs. He bumps into a table making a glass fall off, awakening him and his father who comes running down to see if he's ok. The father tells him he must have been sleepwalking and to go back to sleep.

The next morning they discuss what happened during the night and the father tells the boy he'll lock his door tonight to stop him wandering around. The boy saying he doesn't feel well enough to go to school but his father is unsympathetic and tells him to go to school and that he'll be fine. That evening, we see the father downstairs watching football whilst the boy continues to read the book in his room. In the middle of the night he is then sleepwalking again and begins to bang his head on his bedroom door which is locked, as his Father told him to try and lock his door so that he doesn't escape again from sleepwalking. The Father hears banging which suddenly wakes him up and unlocks his sons door making the boy fall over. Blood is on the door and the boys head, showing the damage he has made to himself by banging his head.

The next day the father allows his son to stay off school and leaves him playing video games when he goes to work. As soon as the father leaves, the boy continues reading his book. That night, the boy ties himself to his bed in an attempt to prevent himself sleepwalking. In the night, we see that he has broken free of the rope/straps and there is a close up of the key turning on its own from the other side of the door. The boy then walks out of the house and onto the pavement where he stands still looking out onto the road. His father goes into his room to check on him, and sees him out of the window. The boy turns his head towards the window where his father is shouting at him and then looks back to towards the road. Car headlights appear in the distance, and as they get closer the boy steps into the road. Just as he is about to be hit, his father dives into the road and saves him. The boy wakes up and has no idea what has just happened.

The father and son are distraught, and decide to burn the book the following day. That night, we see a shot of the boy lying peacefully in bed with an empty table to the side, but his eyes suddenly open at an ECU and he looks to the side to see the book back beside him.

  1. Excellent idea! A touch of the Babadooks? Nicely structured with good ideas for film language. I assume you're using after effects for the near death bit....
